Sobering up at Alcohol Clinics
We have all been there, a night out with friends just before the weekend. Maybe you’d get a drink or two or since it is a weekend, heck, why not go all the way and sleep it off Saturday morning – then do it all over again tomorrow and the day after that.
Drinking is common across cultures and effects of alcoholism vary from person to person that it is never easy to figure out when the lines have blurred between social drinking and problem drinking. Oftentimes, all the warning signs go unnoticed and soon after, the alcoholic will find himself being driven by family members at different drug rehab clinics.
Alcohol abuse is not so much a question of how much you drink as much as HOW it affects you. Once your drinking starts causing problems in your life, then you have a drinking problem.
Alcohol abuse is different from alcoholism. Alcohol abusers are still able to limit their drinking unlike alcoholics who always drink, even at the wrong times (e.g. drinking and driving), but are just as self-destructive and dangerous as alcoholics. Should you find yourself drinking every day or physically compelled to drink, you might be an alcoholic who has crossed over to a worse form of problem drinking.
A lot of alcoholics will not go sober overnight. Denial is and will always be a huge obstacle. Even after admitting they have a drinking problem, an alcoholic will continue to find excuses to keep drinking, insisting that he has it “under control” or that everybody else is “overreacting”.
Recovery is a slow, goal-oriented process from a gradual to a complete withdrawal from alcohol. In some cases, long-term drinkers may need to go to drug detox clinics or alcohol rehab clinics, UK, depending on your location and price range, for a medically supervised detox.
Don’t give up if you relapse or slip up. It doesn’t mean that you are a failure or that you’ll never completely get out of it. Each slip up is a learning opportunity and can strengthen your resolve to commit to sobriety if – and only IF – you choose to stand firm. You are not alone. If you do find yourself spiralling down to a full-blown relapse, do not be afraid to call a counsellor, a family member, or a friend right away for help.
